01426 | [Donnelly O'Keefe is the star of this story as the anchor of all things pageantry for his sister, mother and every other pageant princess in sight at the biggest beauty competition next to Miss America. He can handle women freaking because of a broken heel or a bad ketchup stain on an evening gown, but when his sister's greatest rival comes into the picture with a fiancé who looks like he stepped out of the fifties, some things are going to come into question. Namely, why Don and this guy keep running into each other, and why...why he doesn't exactly hate it.]
I can’t do this story justice with that sub-par summary. It is one of those pieces that’s stunning in its ability to make you want to analyze the themes and symbols and characters and their actions toward each other - in ways typical of gorgeous novels and unparalleled in many other slash stories. The author puts a great deal of thought into her work, and it shows in just how much the pieces won’t leave you when you turn the page or close the site. Don is adorable as the wisecracking hero and Aaron a classic fifties handsome who still, despite his Momma’s Boy ways, manages to exude power, charm and a lot of surprise for the characters who underestimate him. Even the minor characters are interesting ones to watch. Not to mention the setting of a pageant has hardly, if ever, been attempted in slash, and is as unique as the writing style and prowess of I’ll Try Again. Definitely give this one a look. Not complete but updated fairly quickly. |

01431 | [Ever wonder what would happen if you dialed a number on a bathroom stall? Sam does, finding himself staring at a number carved in an Old Navy bathroom. He's just lost his girlfriend, school's out and he's about to go to the band camp from Hell; perfect setup for an impulse, right? But then he chickens out, thinking none the wiser. Too bad there's such a thing as Caller ID, and when his cell rings, who he gets on the other line is not who he expects. Neither is going to band camp only to come face-to-face with the anonymous number, but life can't always be peaches and roses.]
I’ve never seen anyone take the premise of band camp and make it as entertaining as Comodin. As a narrator, Sam is hilarious and very human in his reluctance to admit to certain things and his inability to see others, and the love interest in the story, Daniel, aka Anonymous Number, is a character you may fall in love with in the first chapter because he’s just one of those guys you wish existed in real life. Yet, there’s still enough mystery around him to make you wonder, and the buildup that Comodin is perfecting to his and Sam’s eventual relationship, and even friendship, is wonderful in its deliberateness and skill to range from intense to sweet at all the right moments. The writing is fantastic and the story a gem on fictionpress, so check it out and you might just like it. Updated kind of recently, and hopefully more in the future. |
